DAYS SINCE WE BEGAN THE BARGAINING PROCESS. WE ARE UNITED AND WE WILL MAKE CHANGE.

WIP Reduction & Application Rules

The Air Canada Component of CUPE Wage indemnity Plan Trustees wish to inform the members that there will be a reduction of 0.5% to the contribution rate from 3.3% to 2.8%. The reduction will take effect for the earning incurred in the April block month.

The contribution will now be calculated at 2.8% of your gross earnings for the Wage Indemnity Plan Insurance coverage, this reduction will be reflected on the May 17th pay summary.

Please be aware that Air Canada’s absentee reporting team reviews absences daily. Air Canada monitors the 30 days to apply for WIP, and if you may be contractually denied due to an LOA of 16 or more days, without prepayment of premium, Air Canada will contact you via your corporate email with any requests for information.

Must Dos for an application to WIP:

1. You must see a medical professional within the first 14 days of work missed. (This means that your appointment is while you were ill or injured. A return to work letter done on the last day of illness where the doctor sites you are fit to return to work and have been absent from X to Y, will not suffice for the application to WIP.)

2. You must submit all the paperwork to acclaims@manionwilkins.com within 30 days of first day of work missed and ensure all documents are signed and dated. If you are awaiting the physician’s statement, please submit the claimant’s statement, banking, disclosure and all other medical documents that you have. State the date you gave your physician the documents and the anticipated completion date.

3. Leave of absence (LOA) prepayment of premiums
You will not be eligible for benefit consideration for a total disability commencing during a leave of absence, layoff, or suspension, unless you have elected to keep your coverage in force during the leave of absence, layoff, or suspension.

Prepayment of premiums is not required for an absence from the payroll of 15 calendar days or less. Prepayment of premiums is required for an absence from the payroll of 16 or more calendar days for one of the following reasons. You must prepay the required premium in full within 30 days of the absence to be eligible for benefit consideration immediately following the end of any of these periods:

If your leave of absence of 16 or more calendar days precedes your vacation and you have not prepaid the premium for that leave of absence in accordance with the Continuation of Coverage During Absence From Work section, coverage will not be reinstated until you return to active work. No prepayment of premiums is required when you are absent from work due to vacation.

The Manion Contact Centre number for prepayment inquiries is 1-866-532-8999.

Bargaining Committee Update – 12

We’re continuing our discussions at the table. Bargaining dates are confirmed through to early June, and we’ll keep pushing forward with your priorities front and centre.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Zoom roadshow yesterday evening — registration was just shy of 1,000 participants! It’s clear there’s strong engagement from members, and we’re grateful for your support and solidarity. These Q&A sessions are all about transparency and building power through connection. Your questions, insights, and participation show that we’re not just watching this round of negotiations — we’re actively part of it.

Let’s keep that energy going. Every time we show up, speak out, and support one another, we’re strengthening our collective voice. This is how we win.

Our next roadshow is scheduled for May 14, 2025. You can reach out to contact@accomponent.ca with your questions for that session. However, if you’re looking to get your questions answered directly, please reach out to your Local for support — they’re your first line for info and guidance.

The Bargaining Committee has been working really well together, and after this past week — seeing so many of you show up and speak out at the Zoom Roadshow — we’re feeling motivated and encouraged.

We’re back at the table with the employer next week, and we’ll continue to keep you updated every step of the way.

In Solidarity,

Your Bargaining Committee
