As A Matter Of Fact – Tip Of The Week – Work Related Claims – WIP/WSIB

This is a reminder to all active members about the importance of simultaneously filing a Work-Related Claim and a WIP Claim. If your disability arose out of, or in the course of your employment, you MUST apply for Workers’ Compensation (CNESST in Quebec). However, you MUST also apply for Weekly Indemnity benefits (WIP) in the interim to ensure that there are not any unnecessary delays.

To create a seamless process, we strongly recommend that you fill out the Wage Indemnity (WIP) Claimants’ Statement along with either the WIP applications Attending Physician Statement (APS) or the initial Workers Compensation Attending Physician Statement (APS) and submit the completed APS to Manion. Additionally, and to avoid duplicate medical report costs, please ensure to provide Manion with copies of all detailed medical records going forward that you send to Workers’ Compensation/CNESST. This will avoid out-of-pocket medical report costs to you and Manion will continue to adjudicate your claim in the event that your WSIB/CNESST claim is denied.  This will be an important step in establishing/determining your ongoing eligibility for WIP benefits.

As a reminder, Work Related claims (WSIB claims) may also be entitled to a Top-Up should the WIP benefit rate be higher, however as noted above the claim needs to be registered with Manion.

NOTE: If a member contracts COVID-19 due to onboard contact or becomes ill while on removal during the 14 days elimination period please ensure to inform the Union and to apply for Workers’ Compensation/CNESST as well as your initial WIP application.

The following is a link to a WSIB Committee Bulletin which was sent previously.  It has valuable contact information in the event that you need to file a claim:

As A Matter Of Fact – Tip Of The Week – Canadian Union of Public Employees

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), founded in 1963 with 86,000 members, is a merger of the National Union of Public Employees and the National Union of Public Service Employees. CUPE members are employed mainly in municipal and provincial governments and their agencies, and in schools, universities, hospitals, nursing homes, electrical utilities, libraries, social service agencies and airlines. CUPE’s main function has been to bargain collectively for improved working conditions and to press for progressive labour and social legislation. It is Canada’s largest labour union, with 460,000 members, of whom 55% are women.

CHQ-rouge-17-46 – Reporting for Duty

In 2017 the Union filed grievance CHQ-rouge-17-46 – Reporting for Duty, based on Air Canada Rouge requiring Cabin Personnel to be at the aircraft or gate at their check-in time, which is 1-hour before departure. This requirement failed to recognize the pre-flight duties and time required to go through security. The grievance was scheduled to proceed to arbitration last month, however the parties were mutually able to agree to a settlement prior to the hearing. A Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) was reached earlier this month and effective immediately,  the time Rouge Cabin Personnel are expected to be at the aircraft has been adjusted to provide for a minimum of 10 minutes between check-in time and the time crew are expected to be at the aircraft. This is subject to a trial period of 24 months.

For our Rouge Cabin Crew Members your check-in time now remains at the one-hour mark before departure, however you are not required to be at the aircraft/gate until 50 minutes before departure. This information will also be communicated in The Weekly and we believe ePub will be updated at a later date. This change will also align with the Mainline reporting for duty times. We are pleased that this reasonable expectation is now extended to our Rouge members, and we will continue to evaluate throughout the trial period through the membership.

Happy Holidays,

Season’s Greetings!

Someday soon we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Every day of every week of every month of every year our members make personal sacrifices in their role as Flight Attendants.  This has never been more true than in 2020.  This year brought with it a whole host of challenges, the likes of which we have never seen in our lifetime, and you did not back down.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our members have performed essential work under extremely trying circumstances. At the outset, Flight Attendants answered the government’s call to bring Canadians home from abroad, in spite of the personal risks involved. Canada is a large country, and throughout the pandemic, Canadians have continued to depend on air travel to connect communities and commerce alike. Flight attendants have performed a vital role in keeping this critical industry in the air.

While the holidays might look very different this year, their meaning remains the same.  The Christmas message, even in a time of pandemic, is one that is primarily about hope.

Although 2020 may see the cancellation of some holiday festivities, it will never cancel holiday cheer!  Wherever you are and however you are celebrating, we send you our warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season and we look forward to a brighter 2021!

In solidarity,

Helpful Reminders Over the Holidays

HOLIDAY C1 PASSES

Mainline Cabin Personnel who work on Christmas Day and/or New Year’s Day will receive a C1/J09 pass for each of these days worked.

This includes Cabin Personnel who are on Reserve on either (or both) of those days, but are not called in. These passes can be carried over from year to year until your retirement. The Passes will be added to your travel profile during the the annual refresh – usually around the second or third week of January. In addition, the two annual “Thank You” C1/J09 passes will be added at this time. As previously announced by the Company, you will receive double the usual allotment in 2021. We encourage you to verify and ensure that you receive your allotment.

Please note that the Holiday Passes are not applicable to members working at Air Canada Rouge.

BASE TRANSFER LIST

As a friendly reminder, the base transfer list is refreshed annually at the end of each calendar year. If you are still interested in remaining on the base transfer list, please be sure to resubmit your statement of base transfer in eForms.  Although one-way transfers are not being processed while we have members on layoff, the Company is still processing mutual transfers on a monthly basis.
