Component Officers Update

Component Officers Update

The Union is following up on a few hot topics that we feel need to be reiterated due to the current short crewing, crew rest issues and crew bunk kit enquires.

Prone Rest

The Union has had multiple members reaching out in regards to the newly negotiated language surrounding “Prone Rest”.

The new language that was negotiated enables any crew member to request a minimum eight (8) hours prone rest while on layover.  This is applicable to Mainline and Rouge members, and applicable at any layover destination, and at any assigned or newly assigned layover property.

If you request a minimum eight (8) hours prone rest, and the scheduler assigns you a layover that still remains under your applicable minimum crew rest, you are entitled to continuous duty period credits and any other associated credits.  If you are assigned a layover that maintains an applicable minimum crew rest, your current duty day will end at the commencement of the time you start crew rest.  The newly negotiated language is below, in the bold underlined text, Article 19.05.01 is for Mainline and L55.15.02.01 and L55.15.02.02 is for Rouge:

19.05.01 PRONE REST: An employee is entitled to a minimum of eight (8) hours of prone rest (at their hotel layover room). Prone rest shall commence upon receipt of the hotel layover room key and shall terminate upon hotel check out time, as established by the Service Director or Flight Attendant if there is no Service Director at the layover hotel. In the event the scheduled time between key in hand and hotel check out  time does not match the minimum eight (8) hours prone rest within the scheduled layover period and the employee is electing to extend their rest, s/he shall contact crew scheduling immediately upon receiving his/her room key to advise them of the need to extend his/her layover period to accommodate the eight (8) hours prone rest. If the extended requested layover provides them with the applicable minimum crew rest at layover, the crew member shall not be deemed as being on a continuous duty period and will not be entitled to the associated credits and premiums.

Should an employee miss a scheduled flight in order to obtain his/her prone rest, s/he will be subject to reassignment under article B6.03.

L55.15.02.01 – An employee is entitled to a minimum of eight (8) hours of prone rest (at their hotel layover room). Prone rest shall commence upon receipt of the hotel layover room key and shall terminate upon check out time, as established by the Lead Flight Attendant or Flight Attendant if there is no Lead Flight Attendant at the layover hotel. In the event the scheduled time between key in hand and check out time does not match the minimum eight (8) hours prone rest within the scheduled layover period and the employee is electing to extend their rest, they shall contact crew scheduling immediately upon receiving their room key to advise them of the need to extend their layover period to accommodate the eight (8) hours prone rest.

L55.15.02.02 – Should an employee miss a scheduled flight in order to obtain their prone rest, they will be subject to reassignment under article L55.15.07.

Please remember, you are to call scheduling and advise them if you want your prone rest, this is not something you should assume will be adjusted for you, this is your contractual right to take if you need it.

Short Crewing – Mainline and Rouge

Further to the above, we have been made aware of many members operating short crewed.  Please ensure you fill out a Short Crewing Report, found here on our website by clicking the following link: Short Crewing Report – AC Component.

There are multiple challenges with short crewing, both from a safety aspect, logistical and ergonomic aspect as well as customer satisfaction.  Remember, safety first in all scenarios.  Ensure you follow all SOPs and look out for each other.

Crew Bunk Kits – B14, L18 and L22 Flights – Mainline

Crew Bunk Kits are in the grievance process as many of you are aware, and in order to have accurate data, you are required to complete the steps below to ensure your lack of bedding is noted for the grievance:

If crew members operating B14, L18, L22 notice that they do not receive two (2) clean sheets, two (2) clean pillowcases, two (2) clean blankets, and one (1) pillow (boarded separately), please see the procedure below to follow:

  • SD must call STOC (or overseas station manager) at least 30 minutes prior to departure to request the missing/incomplete bunk kits.
  • Complete a CRU Failure Report (ACF623B).
  • ACF623B can be found in the Globe Briefing Package, the Local office, by downloading it from the portal, the Communication Centre, or by clicking HERE.
  • An In-Flight Service Manager’s info and signature is not required, leave that section blank.
  • Note in the description of events the request for kits was denied and list the number of missing/incomplete kits.
  • List the affected crew members in the appropriate section.
  • The report should be scanned and sent to Paola.Campacci@aircanada.ca.
  • A paper copy of the report may be submitted to the Communications Coordinator to the attention of Paola Campacci YYZ, ZIP 2222.
  • Please also provide copies to your Local Union.

We know this time of year is a stressful one for all, and we appreciate all the reports and communication we have been getting, we are here around the clock to ensure we can assist where practical, please continue to reach out to your Locals, and in any emergency situation, personal or work related, please reach out 247@accomponent.ca.
