DUTY PERIODS START and END TIMES and POST ARRIVAL GROUND DUTY CLAIMS – Refresher bulletin

This bulletin serves to remind members, including our new hires who may not be familiar with a lot of the Collective Agreement rules and entitlements, about duty periods specifically focusing on duty period start and end times, and where the information can be found about them in our Collective Agreement.

Duty Period information can be found in the following articles of the Collective Agreement: B5.02.01, L55.06.04, L55.15.01.01, L55.15.04:

Check in time (duty period start):  Please ensure to report for duty (check in) as required by the Collective Agreement and **any updated times referenced in ePub/block bid package “What’s New” Section/Globe messages for specific destinations based on specific aircraft types.

Articles B5.02.01 (for Mainline), and L55.15.01.01 and L55.15.04 (for Rouge) state that your duty period commences one hour (1:00 hr) prior to scheduled (or rescheduled flight departure if you are notified prior to arrival at airport) when operating a flight.  If you are deadheading from home base your duty period starts thirty minutes (00:30) prior to scheduled departure of deadhead flight, and if away from home base your duty period starts at the scheduled departure of your deadhead flight (Articles B5.02.01 and L55.06.04).

At Mainline:  **the Company can request that you report for duty prior to the 1-hour duty period start in the Collective Agreement by paying you pre-duty ground period time up to 30 minutes.  For example, on widebody aircraft, the company may require you to report for duty up to 1:30 prior to departure,  and the additional 30 minutes is considered pre-duty ground duty time that is paid at ½ of your rate of pay.  See Articles 5.08/B5.03.01.

Please note that it has come to the Union’s attention that management is asking crew members to not follow ePub and go directly to the gate, however ePub for Mainline Employees clearly states that employees need to check their mail folders at the start of every duty period. See the February 26, 2025, On-Time Performance publication that speaks of this.

At Rouge:  the Company can also request that you report for duty prior to the 1-hour duty period start time in the Collective Agreement by paying you pre-duty period extension pay up to 30 minutes and this time is paid at ½ of your rate of pay. See Article L55.15.03

Check out time (duty period end):  Your duty period ends fifteen minutes (00:15) after arrival when operating a flight, and when deadheading your duty period ends at arrival time (Articles B5.02.01, L55.15.01.01, L55.15.04, L55.06.04).  Please note that at the end of your duty period you are officially on crew rest.

Please remember to always submit a claim to be reimbursed for any post arrival ground time when required to remain on board as follows:

At Mainline: If you are required to stay onboard beyond 15 minutes after arrival, please ensure to always submit a post duty period ground claim as you are to be paid these credits at ½ your rate of pay.  There is no minimum amount of minutes required when submitting this claim. (Article 5.08)

At Rouge: If required to remain onboard upon arrival, please ensure to always submit a claim for periods of 30 minutes or more after arrival as you will be paid one-half (½) of your rate of pay, including the Lead Premium when operating as Lead Flight Attendant for the applicable flight. (Article L55.06.08)

NOTE: Your Union will ensure that the Collective Agreement language is respected and that our member’s time is valued. If there is ANY discipline rendered to any member the Union will address it.
