days until our Collective Agreement expires, we are preparing, we are united and we will make change.

Our Bylaws, Your Ideas

Dear members,

As promised back in 2014, we’ve recently launched a brand new Committee with the mandate of carefully evaluating the Air Canada Component of CUPE’s bylaws, and seeing whether or not improvements can be made for the benefit of our membership at large.

Our Union’s bylaws may be misunderstood by much of our community, but they remain the backbone of how your Union operates. They dictate its internal procedures, its finances, its audits, its decision-making processes, its elections, its organizational structure, and so much more. If the Union’s flesh is the compound of its individual members, then the bylaws are its skeleton.

You can take a look at our current bylaws at the following link:

There is no such thing as a perfect system, but any system that seeks to improve must be willing to question itself, appraise itself critically, and constantly evolve and adapt to its community’s changing needs. Our Union also deserves to evolve, and putting this committee in place is, in my opinion, a step in the right direction.

Our newly-formed Component Bylaw Committee has the mandate of reviewing our existing Component Bylaws, soliciting and receiving suggestions and feedback from members, and eventually making recommendations to ACCEX (the Air Canada Component Executive, an elected decision-making group composed of eight of your peers) regarding proposed changes and improvements to our existing Bylaws. Any and all proposed modifications or improvements to bylaws that may eventually be put forward from the Committee will first have to be voted on and approved by ACCEX, and then voted on and approved by members in a referendum.

WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK. Do you have any thoughts or ideas concerning our bylaws? Do you have suggestions about how your Union could change, or improve itself? This is the time to express yourself. Please send us your feedback by email to: bylaws@accomponent.ca.

Thank you for your help and support with this important ongoing initiative.

In solidarity,

Michel Cournoyer
President, Air Canada Component of CUPE
