DAYS SINCE WE BEGAN THE BARGAINING PROCESS. WE ARE UNITED AND WE WILL MAKE CHANGE.

WIP and Taxes

For Members who were on WIP in 2024:

If you were on EI sick insurance carve out and received a top-up or were on long term disability you should have received a T4-A. For Quebec residents you should also receive a RL-1.

WIP timelines, based on medical support of illness, injury, or accident.

1. ELIMINATION PERIOD
7 days covered by and paid by Air Canada sick bank, if you have days in the bank.

2. SHORT TERM DISABILITY (STD) 1
15 weeks paid by Manion, non taxable income.

3. EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (EI) SICK INSURANCE CARVEOUT
26 weeks primary payer government of Canada, secondary payer Manion top-up, taxable income.

During this period, you are on WIP. You must stay in touch with your disability claim manager and provide all requested medical documents and your biweekly EI earnings to Manion for potential top-up. Claimants that do not respond to requests for information from Manion during the EI carveout period may have their claims closed. The closure of the claim may result in an absence without cause and a NO SHOW with Air Canada.

Again, you are still considered to be on WIP even if you are not eligible for the top-up.

4. SHORT TERM DISABILITY (STD) 2
35 weeks primary payer Manion, non taxable income.

5. LONG TERM DISABILITY (LTD)
“Total disability” or “totally disabled” means that, because of a medically determinable mental or physical impairment due to illness or accidental injury, you are not able to engage in any gainful occupation for which you are reasonably fitted by education, training, or experience.

The availability of work does not affect the determination of total disability or totally disabled.
