WIP Wage Indemnity Plan Information

Reminder: if you were on WIP in the EI sick insurance carveout and received a top-up from Manion in 2025, or were on long term disability you should have received your T-4 or RL-1 via mail. If you have not and believe you should have, please contact Manion.

Effective March 1, 2026 reimbursement for application
Upon your initial application to WIP, for a disability date of March 1, 2026 or later, if you require a Medical Practitioner’s Questionnaire to be completed and are charged for it, please provide a receipt from the medical professional who completed it, and Manion will reimburse you up to a maximum of $100 CAD.

Prepayments of LOAs for 16 or more days is required if you wish to have access to WIP insurance coverage should you become disabled and can not return to work. Example, you take and SPLOA for 16 or more days and break your leg, if you can’t return to work after the LOA and book-off, your coverage for WIP, will have LAPSED, IF YOU DID NOT PREPAY. You will be contractually denied WIP. If you prepaid for continuation of coverage you would book-off and then apply for WIP.

The payment for continuation of coverage must be done within 30 days of the start of the LOA. Please contact Manion contact centre for prepayment of LOAs 1-866-532-8999.

Lump sum retro payments
Please review the company information on how those on WIP may be affected.

Question: Will the company allow those on sick insurance to STAY or HOLD their payment should they wish to do so and how would one do this? Concern being they will show earnings, and a new ROE may need to be generated while on claim.

Response: Yes, as per our normal practise, employees who are not active on the payroll at the time of payment whether on an LOA, WIP/STD, or SPD will have their retro payment held in “staging” until they return to work. These employees may request payment release through the HR COE or Rouge HR, but they may be impacted negatively should they receive these funds (reduced WIP earnings, employment insurance overpayments, etc.). It is the employee requesting the payouts responsibility to validate any potential impacts on those benefits should they request a payout of their contractual retro while on leave.

Did you know Short term coverage WIP is for flight attendants when they are deemed totally disabled from their own occupation as a flight attendant due to illness or injury?

“Total disability” or “totally disabled” means that, because of a medically determinable mental or physical impairment due to illness or accidental injury, you are unable to perform the regular duties of a flight attendant. You may apply for WIP should your medical  meet this definition. Short term plan is 4 phase up to a potential of 18 months.

A – 1 week elimination – paid by your sick bank should you have sufficient days
B – STD 1 (short term disability one) – 15 weeks paid by Manion on behalf of insurance plan
C – EI sick insurance carve out – 26 weeks paid by Gov of Canada, topped up by Trust
D – STD 2 (short term disability two) – 35 weeks paid by Manion on behalf of insurance plan

*If you are totally disabled but not eligible for EI benefits due to not having worked the required number of insurable employment hours, you may be eligible for disability benefits paid by the Trust Fund. Disability benefits may be payable for up to a maximum of 26 weeks at 55% of your weekly pre-disability earnings, subject to the current weekly maximum payable under EI. The benefits are taxable. You must submit proof that you are not eligible for EI benefits due to insufficient insurable employment hours, and you must submit your EI denial letter with your claim for WIP benefits to MANION.

Regardless of which phase of plan you are in communication and the provision of requested medical to Manion is required for continuation of coverage.

The definition of long term disability is different and requires a new evaluation, please see the booklet attached HERE for further information on the plan.

“Total disability” or “totally disabled” means that, because of a medically determinable mental or physical impairment due to illness or accidental injury, you are not able to engage in any gainful occupation for which you are reasonably fitted by education, training or experience.

The availability of work does not affect the determination of total disability or totally disabled.
