PBS: Dual Classification Bidding

(This applies to Air Canada Mainline only)

During last month’s awards we discovered a few quirks for crew members bidding in both SD and FA classifications. There are ways to circumvent the problems and below are the step-by-step instructions.

In this bulletin:

     Step-by-step instructions when:

  • SD Default Bid Erased – New UI
  • SD Default Bid Erased – Old UI
  • Specific Pairing Number not showing – New UI
  • Bidding by Specific Pairing Number – Old UI

Having crew members bid both classifications is not new but we have not seen it in a long time. Currently, when an SD is awarded a block as an FA, their SD seniority number must be removed from their profile. When the qualification is put back for the next month’s bid, the SD default bid is lost. We are working on the development of a process within PBS that would no longer require this manual modification and thereby solve the problem.

The other issue is that pairings for one crew member (1P or 1FA only) may not be showing in the drop-down menu under the Pairing Number and the Pairing Number Departing On options. The software provider was able to identify the problem and it will be fixed in the next system update.

For the time being, there are work arounds. Please refer to the following illustrated step-by-step instructions in both the Old and the New UI.

Updated Employee Checklist & Bidding To Avoid Specific Destinations

Due to the deadline on the recall, there may be inaccuracies in the Employee Checklist found in the block bid package for the October block month. Please refer to the Employee Checklist available on ACaéronet under >In-Flight Service >Crew Scheduling & Planning >Block Bid Package for the final version of the document.

For crew who prefer to not operate specific transborder or international destinations, we advise you to avoid bidding for them in PBS. To do so, select the option “Avoid Pairings if Any landings In” and add all of the applicable destination codes you wish to avoid.

As an additional component, to ensure that the system doesn’t also schedule you for deadhead legs into these destinations, please be sure to check the “Counting Deadhead Legs” box when indicating your preferences, as follows:

PBS: Coverage + Bid Line Options

(This applies to Air Canada Mainline only)

During the Coverage Award (Unstacking) process PBS may need to deny Prefer Off and/or Avoid Pairings bid lines. There are a number of other bid line options that are not used during the Coverage Award process. These bid line options restrict the way the PBS award by blocking/preventing the awarding of other pairings that may also need to be assigned during the Coverage Award process. Once the Coverage Award process has been completed, bid line options that were not used for coverage will be used to complete your block if necessary.
