International Women’s Day

March 8th, International Women’s Day, is a day of great significance for women, as it honours their ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. In the past year, women around the world have been fighting for their rights amidst violence, war, and policy changes in their countries.

The death of Mahsa Amini, while in police custody, sparked a revolution in Iran which has garnered worldwide attention and support.  The leaders of this revolution are the brave Iranian women who have, for decades, been brutally oppressed by the Islamic Republic. The fearless women at the forefront of this uprising are demanding justice, freedom, equality, and basic civil liberties for all Iranians.  Today we pay tribute to the unbreakable spirit of the Iranian women who continue to fight for their human rights.

The resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan has greatly impeded advancements in human rights. Women and girls are now banned from secondary and higher education, they are forbidden from travelling long distances without a male chaperone, they must cover their faces in public, and, with the exception of female healthcare workers and teachers, they are not permitted to work outside the home. This crisis is escalating with no end in sight, and the Taliban policies have quickly turned many women and girls into virtual prisoners in their homes.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN reported that gender gaps in food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, and increased gender-based violence have worsened inside Ukraine, and also around the world due to war-induced price hikes and shortages.

The US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade on June 24, 2022. This was a historic piece of legislation, dating back to 1973, that protected a woman’s constitutional right to seek abortion. This decision from the Supreme Court was seen as an attack on women’s rights, causing widespread outcry and demonstrations across the US and around the world.

Although here in Canada we have come a long way in the advancement of women’s rights, there is still a long way to go.  According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, approximately 1.5 million Canadian women currently live on a low income. “Women are also more likely to live in poverty than men due to factors such as motherhood and the choice (or expectation) to devote more time to unpaid work including childcare, housework, meal prep and eldercare.” When you also consider the fact that women working full time make only 74 cents on every dollar earned by men, it’s clear that changes must be made.

Women’s rights are human rights and now is the time for change.

Stress Assess Survey

Do you ever feel:

  • Pressured and physically or mentally exhausted because there’s too much work to do and not enough time or help to do it?
  • An emotional toll because you don’t have the time or resources to care for a client/patient/customer the way you know it should be done?
  • Frustrated because you don’t have control over how your work gets done, or because you lack support from supervisors or management to do your job?
  • Anxious or ill because of the work environment or from being bullied, harassed, or subjected to threats of violence?

If you said YES to any of these questions, this is your opportunity to help the Union act on workplace stress!

The Union has partnered with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) (www.ohcow.on.ca) to launch the Stress Assess Survey based on the internationally recognized Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire.

The purpose is to determine the psychosocial (psychological and social) factors that are most affecting our workplace. Through this survey, the Union will gain invaluable data about how these factors are affecting you at work and where we need to focus to ensure the membership’s mental well-being. With the company moving forward with mental health initiatives and changes in the law that recognize psychological safety at work, it’s crucial that we hear from you.

Participation is voluntary, but we are striving for a minimum 30% participation rate to get the quality of data we need. Please know that all responses are anonymous and that only aggregate data will be used for reports and shared with the Union.

The Survey is a bit long since it must respect specific parameters to gather accurate data on all 13 recognized psychosocial factors. You can expect to spend on average 10-20 minutes. Each question is multiple choice, with the option to add written comments.

If you have any concerns or questions about the survey, please email contact@accomponent.ca.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to support our collective efforts for a safer and healthier workplace. Please spread the word and encourage your colleagues to complete it!

Rally for strong anti-scab legislation

On January 31st, CUPE is organizing a protest in front of the Parliament Hill in Ottawa in support of a bill to limit the use of scabs.
Facebook link of the event
The use of scabs undermines workers’ rights to fair bargaining by removing our capacity to withdraw our labour and tips the scales unfairly in favour of employers.

CUPE members have felt the devastating impact of this unjust system on many occasions, including our members at the Port of Quebec, where workers have been locked out since September 2022.

On January 31st, federal government consultations to prohibit the use of scabs during lockouts and strikes will come to a close. This is a critical moment to make our voices heard that we need a strong anti-scab legislation to protect the rights of workers in Canada.
