Today, we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, a solemn occasion to honor the lives of women who have been victims of gender-based violence and to reaffirm our commitment to ending this injustice.
December 6th commemorates the tragic events of 1989, when 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec, simply because they were women. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing issue of violence against women in our communities and across the globe.
This day is not only a time to reflect on the devastating impact of violence against women but also a call to action. Gender-based violence remains a critical issue in Canada and globally, affecting countless women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
We all have a role to play in creating a safer and more equitable society:
- Educate Yourself: Learn about the systemic causes of gender-based violence and its effects on individuals and communities.
- Support Survivors: Listen to survivors’ stories with empathy and connect them to resources such as shelters, counseling, or crisis hotlines.
- Advocate for Change: Demand stronger policies and increased funding to address violence and support prevention initiatives.
- Challenge Harmful Attitudes: Speak out against sexism, discrimination, and harmful stereotypes that perpetuate violence.
On this solemn day, we light candles, wear white ribbons, and hold vigils to remember those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence. Let us reaffirm our commitment to ending this injustice and building a future of equality, safety, and dignity for all.
Together, we can take meaningful action to create a world free from violence.
In solidarity,
