days until our Collective Agreement expires, we are preparing, we are united and we will make change.

OBSM Using Crew Rest Unit

We wanted to provide you with some clarity on the crew rest facilities. The Union has received reports from several Service Directors demonstrating confusion from OBSMs on this issue. This has sometimes led to the disruption of legal rest, or the uncomfortable and unprofessional situation of crew members sharing intended rest time and space with the person who is assessing them onboard.

Our Service Directors have been rightfully concerned that addressing this issue with OBSMs directly may negatively affect the assessments being carried out onboard. As such, Service Directors have been placed in challenging situations in which they do not feel empowered to assert their rights as workers.

Let us be clear, OBSMs cannot take their rest until after operating crew have done so first. OBSMs must confirm with Service Directors that operating crew have taken their contractually provided rest. OBSMs are not to take rest in the crew rest facilities while operating crew are doing the same. Finally, OBSMs ought to seek instruction from the Service Directors about the appropriate time for them to use the crew rest facilities.

In situations in which the crew bunks are not available to OBSMs, Service Directors may remind OBSMs that they are permitted to use empty passenger seats, as available and appropriate.

The Union has communicated with the Company directly on this issue. The Company committed to reminding all OBSMs in writing of the proper usage of crew rest facilities. There should not be any further instances of OBSMs attempting to join operating crew members in the bunks. If this occurs and you do not feel comfortable confronting the OBSM directly, please reach out to the Union right away.

Coverage of IUDs

The coverage of IUDs was introduced to our benefits plan in January of 2019.

In order to request reimbursement for an IUD, it must be purchased at point of sale prior to submitting a claim.

For clarity, claims for IUDs are NOT processed as prescription drugs. You must pay for the IUD and then submit a claim.  Remember to include the receipt as proof of purchase.

As with all medical appliance purchases, it is strongly suggested that a pre-determination form is submitted in order to verify how much you will be reimbursed for the make and model of the appliance you wish to purchase.

FOR ROUGE MEMBERS:
For Rouge members, IUDs are claimed as a prescription drug.  To confirm coverage of an IUD,  provide the DIN (drug identification number). The DIN can be obtained from your physician, pharmacist or the official drug receipt.

Cabin Air Quality

Recently, there has been a surge in members seeking help and information related to cabin fume events.

There are 2 types of fume events: The first is low, chronic exposure, each time the engines start up or change speed on aircraft that draw cabin air from the engines. These are under-reported because they’re often not noticeable, but still negatively affect our health. The second type, and the one we are more familiar with, is an acute fume event which occurs when there is a mechanical problem that allows a more significant amount of engine oil or hydraulic fluid into the cabin air supply system. This is what commonly gets reported as a ‘dirty sock’ or “gym-bag” or “acrid” smell in the cabin.

Your Union is here to advocate for your health and safety and is available to offer support if you experience or have ever experienced a fume event. Please email air@accomponent.ca or click HERE for a copy of the information provided by the union. There is an automatic response on this email that will give you all the necessary medical information for your doctor and the reporting steps to follow.

Some members have reported that the company provides a FAQ document to crews who experience fume events. It is the Union’s firm position that this document contains many errors and omissions in fact. If you have received this FAQ document, please contact us.
