UPDATE – ACCEX Meet & Greet in YVR

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, ACCEX has decided to postpone their Component Executive meetings that were scheduled to be held in Vancouver (YVR) this week. This also means that the membership town hall meeting, which was scheduled to take place on March 25, 2020, will be postponed as well. We did not make this decision lightly, but feel at the current time we need to be at our bases supporting the membership through these difficult times.

As soon as the Meet and Greet is rescheduled we will provide you with that information.

ACCEX Meet & Greet in YVR

ACCEX will be in Vancouver (YVR) for Component Executive meetings at the end of March and will be holding a membership town hall meeting at the Sheraton Wall Centre Vancouver (1000 Burrard St, in Vancouver) on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm (PST), in the Port McNeill Room. This is an opportunity for all members (Mainline & Rouge), from all bases, to drop by and ask any questions you may have and to get feedback about the issues you encounter while at work, on a daily basis.

Air Transat Acquisition

The Air Canada Component of CUPE has been made aware that the Air Transat Component was motioned to form a Merger Committee.

At this time, the mandate of the Committee is not yet clear to the Air Canada Component, but they do not have the authority or power to override our Mainline or Rouge members’ benefits, working conditions or seniority. Currently there is very limited information being shared from any parties involved with the acquisition and we believe any discussion or preparation needs to be based on fact and not speculation on what may happen. This, we believe, is the most prudent and measured approach.

On December 18, 2019, myself and the Component President for Air Transat, along with CUPE National, met with Transport Canada.  The meeting was held to discuss the possible implications to not only the bargaining unit but the Company and passengers in general.

There has been a great deal of consultation required by the government throughout this process, which is still ongoing. This consultation was with trade unions and the travelling public. If it is of interest to you, the following link will provide a little more information on the public consultation:
https://www.tc.gc.ca/en/transport-canada/corporate/consultations/public-consultation-proposed-purchase-transat-a-t-inc-air-canada.html

ACCEX has had a discussion today on how to move forward and will be reaching out to legal for a full consultation and review.  Once we have a decision back from legal we will be able to review and move forward with a strategy based on fact.

Once we have more information, your ACCEX will meet as a whole to discuss the impending acquisition, and will keep all members posted.  Until we have details such as how the companies will blend, when this will take place, what the company plans to do with Air Transat in general, along with any further Government-imposed rules or regulations, it is difficult to move forward.  The last thing we want to do is work based on rumors.  We need facts.

We appreciate the many comments that have come in, and the overwhelming amount of support on this issue. Knowledge is power, and until we have any concrete news to go on, we have to remain focused and aware.

Bargaining Update

Your ACCEX has concluded the ninety (90) day period of direct bargaining with Air Canada. Unfortunately, an agreement could not be reached at this stage.

We now head into the mediation phase of the 2019 reopener to see if a mediator/arbitrator will be able to bridge the gap between the Company and Union. We are hopeful that with the assistance of a third party we will be able to achieve more for our members.

We thank you for your continued support.

Name Brevets

On August 2, 2016, Arbitrator Louisa Davie issued an interim award relating to name brevets. Click HERE to view.  On April 3, 2019, Arbitrator Davie issued an award affirming her earlier decision.  Click HERE to view.

Per the April 3, 2019 award, “[u]nless the parties agree otherwise in their  negotiations for the 2019-2022 collective agreement, the Employer shall, on or before September 1, 2019, provide employees with a text-based position title brevet. The Employer can do so by (a) redesigning the current brevet to include a text-based position title, or (b) designing a new brevet which includes a text-based position title, or (c) designing a text-based position title brevet to be worn together with the first name brevet.”

The effect of the interim award is that Air Canada will maintain three brevet options.

You have the following three options:

  1. Wearing a brevet consisting of a first name only and position title;
  2. Wearing a brevet consisting of an approved first name pseudonym and position title;
  3. Not wearing a brevet.
